Jeanann Verlee is a former punk rocker who collects tattoos and wears polka dots. She is author of two poetry collections: Said the Manic to the Muse and Racing Hummingbirds, which earned the Independent Publisher Book Award Silver Medal for poetry. She has been awarded the Third Coast Poetry Prize and the Sandy Crimmins National Prize for Poetry. Her work has appeared in The New York Quarterly, Rattle, failbetter, and Adroit, among others, and anthologized in various publications, including Uncommon Core, The Courage Anthology, and Looking for the Enemy. A veteran of poetry slam, she has represented New York City ten times at the National Poetry Slam, Individual World Poetry Slam, and Women of the World Poetry Slam. For eight years, Verlee served as director of the Urbana Poetry Slam reading series, where she also acted as writing and performance coach. She has performed and facilitated workshops at schools, theatres, libraries, bookstores, dive bars, and poetry venues across North America. Verlee lives in New York City with her husband and their rescue pup, Aulë. She believes in you.
