RDS are delighted to welcome Dr Chris Bird, a former Reuters and Guardian reporter, to speak at GTC. Dr Bird put down his notepad leaving more than 10 years of news reporting in the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia to study medicine. His motivation being to return to front lines where he can be hands-on saving lives and alleviating the kind of suffering he used to write about.
Dr. Bird left for his first assignment in October as an aid worker with MSF and blogs from our hospital in Kimbi Lulenge health zone in Lulimba, a small town in South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). South Kivu is a hotbed of violence where civilians bear the brunt of the conflict leaving them often displaced and vulnerable to disease, malnutrition, and war-related injuries. Dr. Bird works in a hospital which provides free primary and secondary health care.
All guests are welcome to attend dinner in Green Templeton after the talk. Members of the college can sign up here http://www.gtc.ox.ac.uk/college-life/booking-meals-online.html. If you are not a member of GTC and would like to attend the dinner, please let the RDS committee know!
