Despite her struggle with illness, she has managed to realize her dream of becoming an award-winning singer and founding a critically acclaimed opera and musical theatre company. She is committed to using her passion for music to help others, and since 2009, her benefit performances have raised over $26,000 in aid of those suffering from chronic neuro-immune diseases. WHAT IS ME/CFS? Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a serious physical illness that affects an estimated twenty-eight million people worldwide. Best known for causing crushing exhaustion unrelieved by sleep, ME/CFS affects many body systems, causing everything from chronic pain and heart problems to impaired vision and memory loss. Both physical and cognitive exertion worsen the symptoms, and studies report that ME/CFS can be as disabling as lupus and late-stage AIDS. The illness affects more people than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy combined, but the cause of the disease is still not known, and many cases remain undiagnosed. WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA? Fibromyalgia Syndrome is an increasingly common chronic illness that affects an estimated 2-5% of people worldwide. Characterized by unrelenting and widespread pain, Fibromyalgia is also associated with other debilitating symptoms such as memory and sleep dysfunction, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, balance problems, irregular heartbeat and crippling fatigue. As with ME/CFS, symptoms can vary not just from person to person but from day to day, and some sufferers may even appear healthy to the casual observer. Also like ME/CFS, the disease is often extremely debilitating, and can affect people of all ages and from all walks of life.
