In line with Singapore Heritage Festival and the Shaw Empire exhibition, the National Museum presents a screening of the 1959 Cantonese Shaw movie, The Merdeka Bridge. Directed by Chow Sze-luk and starring Patricia Lum Fung and Cheung Ying Choi, the melodrama follows the romance between a much-adored songstress Yim-mui (Lam) and a poor artist Man-wei (Cheung). Soon after Yim-mui sends Man-wei abroad for school, Yim-mui's spoiled brother teams up with a rich businessman to force Yim-mui into prostitution.
Shot on location in Singapore, including the Merdeka Bridge, featuring a screenplay based on true accounts.
The screening will be introduced by Dr. Lai Chee Kien, with a discussion session after the movie screening.
