ABOUT FRANKIE MARTINEZ:
Frankie Martinez is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and renowned Latin contemporary dancers of his generation.
Frankie’s exploration into the Afro-Caribbean roots of his performance art and the choreographic possibilities native to Latin/Afro-Latin dance positions him as one of the foremost authorities in the genre.
A 4th degree black belt in Shotokan karate and a former serviceman of the U.S. Navy, Frankie approaches his art form with unrivaled discipline and razor-sharp focus. These qualities combined with his rich Puerto Rican heritage and inherent musicality have helped to distinguish him as a true pioneer in the performing arts world – developing his own brand of dance entitled, “Afro-Latin Funk”.
In 2000, Frankie established his own dance troupe, the ABAKUÁ Afro-Latin Dance Company (ABAKUÁ). Within months of its inception, ABAKUÁ gained notoriety at a blinding pace within the Latin dance community and then ultimately to the performing arts community at large. This came about as a result of Frankie’s choreographic artistry and innovation as well as the talent of his personally trained dancers.
To date, Frankie Martinez and ABAKUÁ have performed in over 50 cities and over 20 countries worldwide.
To this day, Frankie is constantly sought after for performances, interviews, and workshops/lectures around the world.
