The Black Lunch Table Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon at the Studio Museum in Harlem parallels discourses and methods present in Samuel Levi Jones's project space exhibition Unbound. In his practice, Jones reworks diverse source materials—from encyclopedias and law books to technical manuals—and deconstructs these widely published arbiters of authenticity to challenge the relevance and accuracy of certain historical records. The aims of The Black Lunch Table Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon are to similarly explore archives of knowledge made visible or hidden by authoritarian systems. This special uptown edition of the Black Lunch Table (BLT) project is a response to the omission of so many black artists from larger art historical narratives and studies of vernacular production.
BLT at the Studio Museum will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of Black artists—including many housed in the Museum's permanent collection—with first person accounts and research materials. Together we will create historical documents that respond to the urgent need for a reconstruction of the art historical record!
The BLT artist project is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine and Heather Hart which, in its 10 year existence, has sought to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history. BLT's aim is the production of discursive sites at literal and metaphorical lunch tables, wherein people of color can engage in critical dialogue on topics directly affecting our communities. They endeavor to create spaces, online and off, mirroring the activity and creativity present in sites where Blackness and Art are performed, discussed and consumed.
The Black Lunch Table and The Studio Museum in Harlem will provide technical support, research materials, tutorials and refreshments. Participants should bring a laptop or tablet, power cords.
