Apologies for announcing this over five months ahead of the planned date, but due to the remoteness off the destination accommodation tends to be a bit difficult to come by and books up well in advance. Gordon and I tackled this route in May of last year, taking part in the official 'Bealach Beag' sportive event. This years event is much earlier (mid April) and so Scott and I had talked about going late Spring/early Summer, doing it under our own steam and using the money that would have been paid out for the event to pay for a night's accommodation instead. :) The plan is to leave Edinburgh mid-afternoon on Friday 12th June, drive the four and a half hours to Shieldaig, which is west of Inverness, stay overnight in B & B accommodation, cycle the Bealach na Ba climb and the Applecross Peninsula on the Saturday, dinner, a few beers and B & B again on the Saturday night and then head back down to Edinburgh after breakfast on the Sunday, arriving home early/mid afternoon. I've provisionally booked accommodation in the 'large cottage', at Kinloch just outside Shieldaig on the banks of Loch Torridon, for the nights on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th June. This can accommodate up to SIX people, but if we require additional numbers, the owners can happily take a few more of us in the main house. It's £38.00 per person, per night, for bed and breakfast. For those who might perhaps be unfamiliar with the Bealach na Ba, it's famed for being the biggest road climb in the UK, rising for sea level to 2053 feet (626m) in under 6 miles! It's the nearest thing that some of us might get to tackling an alpine pass. The entire loop from Shieldaig, up and over the Bealach, through Applecross and back along the magnificent coastline is 'only' 44 miles, but features nearly 6500 feet (2000m) of climbing in total!! This is a route that every amateur club cyclist should have on their to-do list. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to reply on here or drop me a PM. As stated, I appreciate that it seems like a long way off, but I've to get back to the B & B in the next fortnight or so with confirmed numbers. I'll also be looking for a £25 per person deposit, so please only commit to this if you're definitely able to join us. Thanks. (DB)
