Our spring performance season at Moorpark College is now over and it has been amazing, tragic, and bittersweet. Now looking ahead toward the summer, I am excited to inform you that I will again be running a Summer Jazz Combo/Improvisation Workshop. Last summer was a huge success in which students formed 3 jazz combos (ranging from high school students to college students and even lifelong learners), worked hard to refine their skills, and performed all around town. Our performances included features at Moorpark Country Days, the Simi Valley Town Center, and the Westlake Village July 4th Fireworks Show. In fact on July 4th we were the closing act before the fireworks and performed for about 1,000+ people filling the Westlake Village Golf Course. We have a number of performances lined up this summer as well.
Those who participate this summer will be assigned to combos that will meet once per week for three hours in Chatsworth beginning on the week of June 7th. Each individual combo (6-10 members) will meet at a time that will fit into everyone’s schedule. The focus of this workshop will be on building instrumental dexterity, learning jazz standards, following chord changes, building solos with continuity and shape, analyzing the jazz masters, contributing to the ensemble, and composing. This will be a great opportunity to build as a musician and make connections with other local, ambitious musicians.
The Summer Jazz Combo/Improvisation Workshop will last a total of ten weeks and will cost $300. For those who would like to participate, please fill out the online survey listed on the link in this flyer: http://www.virtualjazzstudio.com/files/sjciw2015.pdf. Please also forward this on to anyone else you think might be interested in participating. Thank you.
