Schooled from an early age in jazz, tap and ballet, as well as modern and hip-hop, Suhaila began integrating her extensive classical training with the Middle Eastern dance passed on by her mother. Suhaila Salimpour has been teaching over 30 years and has revolutionized belly dance as an instructor, choreographer and performer. JAMILA SALIMPOUR is the “mother of tribal bellydance” in America and has been an influential figure in belly dance for over 60 years. She was the first one to solidify a format of belly dance terminology that is still in use today and is taught and applied to dancer movements worldwide. Jamila created Bal Anat, the first Tribal Belly Dance company, in 1968. For more than a decade now, Bal Anat lives on under the direction of her daughter Suhaila to educate audiences world-wide about the cultural history of Belly Dance in the United States and the Middle East. Suhaila’s unique vision began to take shape when she embarked on rewriting her mothers book “The Danse Orientale” which was the first ever written text to systematically categorize Middle Eastern Dance movement. The result is an evolution into "The New Danse Orientale" which maintains the purity of her mother’s original work, but also adds the systematic and progressive teaching methods found in classical dance forms. Now, the Suhaila Salimpour Format and School of Belly Dance enjoy worldwide success. Dancers who train with The Salimpours quickly realize Suhaila’s method of teaching allows them to excel in their art beyond any other training they have received. Please explore Suhaila's website at
