Opening: Tuesday 2 June 5.30 - 7.30pm Exhibition: 3 - 27 June 2015 Layer upon layer of water, stone, built environments, folded hills and imposing cones are realised by Stanley Palmer in his latest exhibition ‘Return - Otago Peninsula.’ Based on studies from his time spent in Broad Bay at the start of 2014 as John Caselberg Trust artist in residence, these new paintings are assured investigations into certain configurations of land and various features of places as they are remembered. Wind-brushed trees and meandering pathways punctuate curiously shaped hills and imposing hill formations. From Tairoa Heads can be seen Aramoana and its causeway; behind Harbour Cone lies the Papanui inlet; across the shallow, reflective estuary Portobello calmly sits below Hooper’s Inlet roads and the surrounding hillsides. Otago Harbour’s Kamau Taurua or Quarantine Island has been painted by Palmer as has a view of the Pyramids looking down from behind Portobello. Such renderings are sensitive, considered and unique evocations of remarkable views.
