Ready for a life changing adventure? Since June of 2010 the Slyboots School has organized their “Annual Adventure Abroad”– a series of international study experiences for a small groups of American students to the Dagara Music Center in Ghana, West Africa. The group’s residencies have been filled with hands on instruction and complete immersion into West African music, dance and culture. Slyboots 2015 Trip to Ghana Time Frame & Cost The trip is expected to run from May 21st to June 11th 2015. The ball-park fee for this three-week trip is $3,500.00 and it includes your airfare, pickup and drop off at the airport, six hours of lessons a day (three in the morning and three in the evening), housing, three meals a day, and all excursion costs and entrance fees. Accommodation is one to two people in a room. There is running water and showers. Our home base will be the Dagara Music Center in a small village called Medie. The DMC was founded by my mentor- world renowned master musician- Bernard Woma. You can read more about Bernard and the DMC here: Programming The program of study includes drumming, dancing, singing, batik and tye-dye making, kente weaving, bead making, basket weaving, cooking, volunteer teaching at nearby schools, working with social groups such as drum makers, market women, church groups and community-based network groups. We will also do some excursion trips to the Kintampo, waterfalls, the Buabeng Monkey Sanctuary, the ancient city of Kumasi, Mole National Park, the slave castles in Cape Coast, the longest canopy walk in the world and the breath taking city of Accra where you will see the Art Center, the National Museum, the University of Ghana, and see a show at the National Theatre. As you can see, the program is not just in music and art alone. It covers a wide range of disciplines and participants don't have to be musicians to gain knowledge and experience on the trip. This is an engaging trip, a great learning opportunity and a cultural experience like none other.
