SANTA CRUZ, California - Get ready for some house rocking Blues, American, and Country Music as we kick summer in to high gear at the Santa Cruz American Music Festival this Memorial Day weekend, May 23rd & 24th, at Aptos Village Park in Aptos, California. Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the beginning of summer vacations, family fun, and great musical experiences, shared with both old and new friends. For more than 22 years Aptos Village Park has been the host to a rich and storied history of great music that brings us all together. This year will be no exception, as the Santa Cruz American Music Festival keeps that tradition alive with a talent roster that will be one for the record books. The Santa Cruz American Music Festival will be an unprecedented celebration of music and natural splendor, setting the bar high by bringing world-class artists together for this two-day musical bonanza in one the most beautiful venues in the world. We hope you will join us as we pay tribute to some of the finest musical talents around!
Saturday, May 23rd, will showcase some of today’s greatest blues musicians. Big Sam’s Funky Nation will start the day with their pure unadulterated New Orleans jazz/funk. An engaging band leader, Big Sam also plays the trombone like a man possessed with the spirit of Louis Armstrong—ingratiating, inspirational and the perfect energetic up and comer to start the party. Next up is the award-winning, hard-touring, guitar slinger, Ana Popovic, playing smoking electric funk and slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals combined with tight blues groove and soulful, feminine vocals. Coco Montoya will follow with his explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice, a combination that has propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. For this special event, and to get things cooking onstage, Montoya will be accompanied by friend and contemporary Chris Cain. And as San Jose Mercury News music reviewer John Orr writes, "more than anyone else, anywhere, Chris Cain represents the future of the blues." Next, JJ Grey & Mofro kick things in to high gear with his grimy blend of front porch soul and down-home storytelling. He is “smoldering Otis Redding-inspired country-soul ballads…full-bore blues-rock, down-home roots and soul… uproariously funky and melodic homespun tales that are gritty and deeply personal, confrontational and universal.” Closing Saturday will be ten time Grammy Award winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Bonnie Raitt. Named one of Rolling Stones “100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” Bonnie Raitt's mellifluous voice, accomplished guitar playing and classic catalog of blues, folk, R&B, and pop songs have made her one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation.
Sunday, May 24th will feature hot country with a twist of American Chicano rock. First up is Drake White & The Big Fire. Named one of Billboard Magazine’s 10 Hot Country Artists to Watch in 2015 and dubbed “an electric performer with a gospel howl” by Rolling Stone Country, White made Rolling Stone’s list of the 37 Best Things We Saw at CMA Fest 2014. Next, Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham. Critics and fans alike, are saying; “Ryan Bingham’s songs will still be around long after the Oscar Glow is gone. This dude is writing for the ages.” Followed by, Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum selling, American Chicano rock power trio, Los Lonely Boys. These boys will rock the house with their own brand of Texican Rock and Roll; one part Texas blues and Tejano, add some teary eyed country, and shake it up vigorously. Famous for hits like “Heaven, Real Emotions and Diamonds.” Top-selling, country recording artist, Kellie Pickler will follow. Kellie first won the nations heart as a contestant on American Idol. Propelled by popular singles "Someone Somewhere Tonight" and "Little Bit Gypsy," The Woman I Am landed No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart and marked her fourth consecutive Top 5 release on the Top Country Albums chart. Closing the festival will be America’s Technicolor cowboys, Big & Rich. The two exploded into the public consciousness in 2003 as that rarest of breeds, true country music game changers. Individually, John Rich and Big Kenny Alphin are first-rate musicians, songwriters, producers and entertainers. Together, they are one of the most truly original musical forces ever unleashed on a welcoming world.
