Crime towards the elderly holds victims, families, friends,& neighborhoods hostage. It rips communities apart or prevents them from coming together. That’s why Every year during Older American's Month *(MAY), Senior Education Ministries, Inc. works with the community and various law enforcement entities from the city, state and federal government on an annual "themed" service project for our senior citizens. The 9th (annual) themed program/ expo -SCAMMERS IN WONDERLAND on May 19th will partner w/ area businesses, law enforcement officials, etc. to help the seniors recognize the scams that are so prevalent in our communities. This FREE annual community based program provides the elderly with informational tools to overcome the fear of being a target for would-be scammers. Presenters will include Sgt Joe Watts with the Indiana State Police and Terre Haute Police Department Chief John Plasse who will instruct on Property Scam Prevention and Property Theft Prevention; AND (Pastor) Jeff Lee-Warrior Institute who will instruct and do demonstrations on self-defense for seniors. A complimentary meal (courtesy of Signature Healthcare) will be served during the presentations In addition to the formal program, State, Regional and local businesses (IN and IL) will set up informational tables and pass out resource information in a themed atmosphere which will lighten the anxiety of the topic but still provide subtle reminders to be alert and stay aware. Senior citizens can be vulnerable targets but they don’t have to be. With education, they'll recognize the importance of identifying those who truly have credibility. Seniors learn think before acting when someone wants personal information or when offering something too good to be true! Handicapped accessible.-one level Limited loaner wheelchairs available.
