Composed by Huang Ruo

Conducted by John Kennedy
Directed and Designed by Jennifer Wen Ma
Spoleto Festival USA presents the world premiere of Huang Ruo and Jennifer Wen Ma’s Paradise Interrupted, an arresting new opera marrying Chinese tradition dating from the Ming Dynasty with contemporary Western idioms. In a dream, a woman meets her lover and searches for an unattainable ideal as a vast garden grows from an empty stage, only to disappear as her dream ends. Revered visual artist Jennifer Wen Ma, known to global audiences for her work on the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, directs and designs this exquisite opera. The dreamer is Qian Yi, whose performance in Lincoln Center Festival’s The Peony Pavilion—presented at Spoleto Festival USA in 2004—was lauded by The New York Times: “She is now China’s reigning opera princess, and in The Peony Pavilion her talents are in full flower.” Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy leads a chamber orchestra mixing Western and Chinese instruments in a score that is at once a continuation of tradition and entirely new.
