-About the Little Match Girl Passion-
“The Little Match Girl Passion” is at once an indictment of poverty and a religious allegory. A girl from a poor family is sent out into the snow on New Year’s Eve to sell matches. No one wants to buy them, so she lights them one at a time to keep herself warm. In the flames she has visions of warmth and love. Eventually she freezes to death holding the matches.
Lang draws a parallel between the suffering of the match girl and that of Jesus; both are scorned by the crowd, die and are transfigured. (The word “passion” comes from the Latin word for suffering.) The result is one of the most haunting and beautiful musical textures in recent years.
