Saturday May 23rd in Austin, Texas will bring “Plaidstock”, a tribute and fundraiser for legendary Austin guitarist Davy Jones at the HOLE IN THE WALL.
The colorful and outspoken Jones has been an easily recognizable fixture on the Austin music scene for 35+ years, having played every major and minor club along the way including Raul’s, Duke’s Royal Coach Inn, Club Foot, Liberty Lunch, Emo’s, Antone’s and Stubb’s with bands including The Ideals, The Next, The Hickoids, The Diamond Smugglers and The Dicks as well as numerous other equally and lesser known acts. Davy has also toured nationally and internationally with the Hickoids and The Dicks and has twice been voted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame with these acts. In May of last year Davy was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer on the eve of a month long European tour with the Hickoids. He was forced to forego the trip and began radiation and chemo treatment which has been ongoing for almost a year now.
Davy’s influence and impact through multiple eras are immeasurable and he has been a constant in an ever-changing and to some, barely recognizable Austin. College friend and award winning bluesman Robert Hill had this to say: "I had the good fortune of meeting Davy just after I had bought my first guitar at age 17. He was already a great guitarist, and taught me my first chords, along with all sorts of licks. We were roommates for a couple of years in college - he also turned me on to a ton of great records and bands that I would never have known about otherwise. I learned more in 2 years playing with him, than I did in 4 at college." ...and Pat Doyle of legendary and influential Austin thrash punk band The Offenders: “I met Davy when he was still in the Army living in Killeen, sometime in 1978. He is Offenders fan #1. His kool-kat vibe and infectious exuberance was hard not to fall in love with. By that time he’d already illustrated his own comic strip, hosted a couple of radio shows, and toured with his band, even sharing a stage with Iggy and Chrissie Hynde. Then in 1980 he convinced his old friend Mick Buck to sing for the Offenders, and the two collaborated on songs like “Lost Causes” and “Poorhouse Energy.” All the band members camped on his living room floor for weeks at some point during that year. And of course, he wrote the lyrics for “I Hate Myself.” Davy’s example and tangible encouragement helped to elevate us from an idea to a band. He will always be the fifth Offender to us.” These are just a couple of dozens of similar stories.
“Plaidstock” takes it name from Davy’s trademark plaid suits which are often complemented by hand painted psychedelic cowboy boots and hat. We’re encouraging attendees to wear their Sunday plaid in tribute.
Please join Davy’s family, lifelong friends and band mates as we gather to pay tribute to and raise money for a true legend in a world where “legendary” is over-used.
