Towner holds a collection of 78 watercolours painted between the years 1852 and 1854 by the Victorian artist Louisa Paris (1811–1875). The paintings depict a variety of locations in South East England, including 22 of Eastbourne itself.
These rarely seen paintings, complete with handwritten notes detailing date, location and weather conditions, present a fascinating narrative of local social history and the changing landscape.
They also give an insight into the personality and emotional state of the artist herself.
