When we hear that there has been another shooting at a school or in a neighbourhood in our city, we contemplate what, if anything, we could have done to prevent it. For many of our young people, there is no need to empathize because it is very real for them. They have the unfortunate experience of losing close friends and family to violence in our communities, and they are feeling terrorized, sad and scared.
Recently, you may know that we have experienced an increase in gun violence in this area. Thankfully, there has not been loss of life, but we don’t want to wait for more shots are fired and lives endangered before we act. We know that it may not be possible to reach those who are in conflict and ready to perpetrate violence right now, but we want to make it clear that our intention for this community is for a peaceful existence. We want our community to be focused on how to move forward together, not on keeping to ourselves and living in fear. We want to live free of violence and victimization.
That’s why on June 13, 2015 from 1 to 4p.m. we will gather together at Warden Woods Community Centre under the banner of PEACE4Scarborough. It’s an initiative that starts with us and we hope that it will expand beyond our community to reach everyone in the city who wants to be intentionally focused on bringing peace to our communities.
This is not a complicated campaign – its easy. All you have to do to participate is to display a PEACE4Scarborough sign in your window or take a picture with the #PEACE4Scarborough hash tag and post it on Instagram, twitter or facebook. If you pray, you can devote some time to praying for peace. If you don’t pray, you can express your desire for peace in conversations with your friends or by commenting on our website. It truly is as simple as expressing our collective intentions for peace.
Have a peace-filled day!
