Born Héctor Juan Pérez Martínez in Ponce, Héctor moved to New York when just sixteen years old; and soon came to sing with the Kako All-Stars, under bandleaders Johnny Pacheco and Willie Colón, before eventually striking out on his own. His stage-name, Lavoe, derives from the Spanish "la voz" (meaning "the voice") because of his clear sonority; and his immaculately-phrased vocal improvisations earned him the sobriquet "El Cantante de los Cantantes" or 'The Singer of Singers'.
Héctor Lavoe's voice is one of salsa's iconic voices, poignantly immortalised in its greatest hits "El Cantante", "Mi Gente", "Periódico de Ayer" and "Todo Tiene Su Final". It's impossible to imagine a salsa world without him... so we're just doing the opposite, and celebrating Lavoe's lustrous legacy with our first Parrandita.
Scintillating hits by resident music-magicians Stephen Parranda Jackson and Loo Yeo, featuring 'Open Decks' for Parranda Guest DJs. Sizzling line-ups by Host Eşref Parranda Ulaş and talented Parrandastrellas. A tribute to one of salsa's best-loved artists. And most of all, that warm welcome which Parranderos have become famous for.
Sounds like the perfect Parrandita combination!
