On The Cusp is a new semi-regular promotion and collaborative live performance project from Tombed Visions Records and Cusp recordings. As it’s a Bank Holiday, we will be opening our doors slightly earlier so those of you that have work the next day can still come down and enjoy the beatific vibes! We are ecstatic to bringing Italian Fire musicians Jooklo Duo to Manchester in a special live collaboration with Nick Mitchell’s Chalaque! The Jooklo’s have been carrying the torch for the most expressive, passionate and spiritual music that erupted from the Jazz scene in the States in 1960’s with their own intuitive and distinct approach that has spawned colloborations with an insanely rich cast of legendary msucisans that include Sonny Simmons, Sabir Mateen, Don Moye, Thurston Moore, Bill Nace and Makoto Kawabata….to scratch just the surface. We cannot wait to hear them demolish the Mill with Manchester’s resident guitar Arsosnist and string shredder Nick Mitchell. Here’s a little about them both: JOOKLO DUO: Born 1984 in Italy, Virginia Genta is self-taught and plays saxophone (tenor, soprano, baritone, alto), flutes, clarinet, plus some percussion and keyboards. Since 2003 she’s been working with drummer and percussionist David Vanzan in several projects such as Jooklo Duo, Neokarma Jooklo Trio (or Sextet, Octet, Experience), Golden Jooklo Age, and the Jooklo Finnish Quartet. She started playing music from improvisation while quite young, and has always been moving in the music cosmos with a deep, natural and spontaneous approach to creation, constantly working to find the highest way of expression connected to the oneness of universe. Besides this, the devotion of Virginia finds freedom also through drawings and illustrations. A restless activity during the past few years (about 400 concerts and a countless amount of recording sessions, some of those released on labels like Qbico, Conspiracy, and her own Troglosound), brought her to collaborations with musicians like Chris Corsano, Paul Flaherty, Bill Nace, Sonny Simmons, Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, John Blum, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Takehisa Kosugi (Taj Mahal Travellers), Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Sonic Youth, Hartmut Geerken, Famodou Don Moye, Makoto Kawabata, Andrew Barker, Muruga Booker, Raymond Strid, Giorgio Pacorig, among others. CHALAQUE: “Chalaque began life as a solo project but by Sounds From The Other Ideology they have morphed into a power trio with all the controls set to max, matching Mitchell’s explosive, non-stop soloing style with a stream-rolling rhythm section that works free statements of time into the kind of stupor inducing velocities of a Mötorhead or a Harry Pussy. The rhythm section consists of drummer Pascal Nichols, who plays in Manchester’s Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides, and bassist Eric Hardiman, a member of Albany, New York guitar orchestra Burnt Hills… Together they create the kind of genre-devouring force that you always wished Last Exit could’ve more effectively harnessed, hallucinating a solid steel pulse by never definitively stating it, with the kind of sleight of hand a dream team Ronald Shannon Jackson/Yasushi Ozawa of Fushitsusha hook-up might have had.” David Keenan, The Wire.
