Please join with the men and women of Oak Forest Area Democrats at their June meeting to be held on MONDAY, JUNE 1, 2015 at Don Jose Mexican Restaurant, 5305 Antoine @ Pinemont, Houston, Texas 77091. We begin with our social period of meet, greet and eat (Dutch Treat!) from 6:30-7p.m. where everyone can visit and get to know one another. The gavel falls promptly at 7pm for our monthly business meeting. Perfect time for getting signatures on candidate ballot petitions by the candidates only!
This month will be a jam packed night with lots of activities, presentations and personalities. Starting the night will be the swearing in of our new slate of officers for 2015-16 who include John Bartos, Parliamentarian; Chris Morton, Treasurer; Mary Lowrey Schlett as Secretary; Randy Bates as Vice President; and, Carl Whitmarsh as your President. There will be some surprise personalities present to do the honors of swearing in, so you have to be there to see who it is.
We are most honored to welcome DR JIM RINE, President of Oil Patch Democrats, who will be presenting, with audio visual aids, on Carbon Fee & Dividend Resolution An Economic Approach to Mitigating Climate Change and Saving the Planet (as we know it) Dr Rine has over thirty years of combined experience within academia and the petroleum industry and has been a geologic advisor within the Houston area for the last ten years. His paper “An Examination of Carbon Budgets, Carbon Taxes, Industry Attitudes to Global Warming, and AAPG” was just published in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists/ Division of Environmental Geosciences (AAPG/DEG) journal, Environmental Geosciences. Jim rec youeived his doctoral degree in marine geology in 1980 from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (RSMAS) at the University of Miami (FL). During his career, Jim has published on a variety of topics ranging from marine geology, geology of a giant oil field in Egypt, groundwater hydrogeology, and, most recently, implications of climate change on the petroleum industry. Jim is also the current president of OilPatch Democrats.
We will celebrate a bit with some cake and other goodies to say thank you to our outgoing Vice Presient, Jan Clark and our outgoing Treasurer, Jane Tillinghast as well as wishing a Happy 77th Birthday to our Secretary, Mary Lowrey Schlett and also Happy Birthday and Welcome home to our former OFAD President, SD 15 Chair and SDEC, HCCS Trusteee District 1 and now President of the HCCS Board of Trustees, Zeph Capo. Now in addition to all of this, any DEMOCRATIC candidate running in November is welcome to stop by and we will be glad to introduce you – BUT, only scheduled speakers will be making remarks because of time constraints.
We’ll end the evening with the appearance and presentation of one of our neighborhood State Representatives, SYLVESTER TURNER, candidate for Mayor who will be driving directly to OFAD from Austin upon Sine Die of this session of the legislature. I imagine Sylvester will have some great info to share with all. If nothing else, Representative Turner deserves some sort of award of valor for having survived the Republicans game of revolution with cap guns. Please make every effort to welcome Representative Turner back home to Houston and his home Democratic Club, Oak Forest Area Democrats. I have even heard on good authority that OFAD favorite son and Harris County Democratic Party Chair, Lane Lewis, will be on hand to welcome our guests and Sylvester back to sanity.
