Swaggering carnival barker Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries naive millworker, Julie Jordan, but loses his job just as Julie becomes pregnant. Desperate to provide for his family, he takes part in a robbery that goes bad. Facing prison, he takes his own life and finds himself “up there.” For one day fifteen years later, Billy returns and encounters his daughter, a lonely, friendless teenager: her father's reputation has overshadowed her young life. How Billy instills dignity and hope in his child and Julie, her mother, testifies to the power of love. Of all the shows Rodgers & Hammerstein created, Carousel was their favorite.
