236 Troutman St, Brooklyn
An unmissable night of performances by Kia Labeija and Lion, Dana Michel, and Antonio Ramos and the gang bangers, live music by Sunny Jain (Red Baraat), and dance party with the legendary DJ Rekha.
Kia Labeija: "Like the midway ocean when it meets an erupting volcano they collide. / And in the most decadent violence they begin to dance until the water has turned the volcanic lava into precious stone. "
Montreal-based Dana Michel works in choreography and performance. Before deciding on a BFA in Contemporary Dance in her late twenties, she was a marketing executive and competitive athlete. In 2014, she was awarded the newly created ImPulsTanz Award in recognition for outstanding artistic accomplishment and was highlighted amongst notable female choreographers of the year by The New York Times. The year concluded with her solo Yellow Towel appearing on the Time Out Magazine’s “Top Ten Performances” list.
Antonio Ramos was born and raised in Puerto Rico where he trained in jazz, salsa and African dance. His choreography has been produced at Hostos College, The Kitchen (Works and Process), New York Live Arts (Studio Series), Dance Theater Workshop (Fresh Tracks and Split Stream), SUNY/Purchase, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!), Dixon Place, PS122, Joe’s Pub, Taller Pregones, Danspace Project, Movement Research at the Judson Church, and many other venues. Antonio was an Artist-in-Residence at El Museo del Barrio 2011-12. He was a 2011-12 National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures Award Recipient. He was a curator of the Movement Research Festival Spring 2013 and is a current MR Artist-in-Residence.
A product of the evolving tastes and worldviews of a globalized generation, Sunny Jain is a trailblazer. He founded and plays dhol in the band Red Baraat, the most successful Indian-American band in North America with performances at the White House, TED Talks, London Paralympics Closing Ceremony, Bonnaroo Music Festival and Austin City Limits. The band was named "Favorite Live Shows of 2011" by NPR and the band’s last record, Shruggy Ji, debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts. In 2015, you can catch Sunny Jain touring with Red Baraat and playing drumset with Tongues in Trees, a new band featuring vocalist Samita Sinha and guitarist Grey Mcmurray.
