For those of you interested in joining me in attempting the climb up Shasta on Memorial Day weekend, we need to head up and play in the snow a little bit more to make sure everyone is comfortable with their ice axe, crampons, helmets, etc.
If you aren't coming with to Shasta, you are still welcome to come, however you will still need an ice axe, crampons, a helmet, etc. This will be a snow hike, and it is a 14'er. I plan on doing the hike in 1 day, which is do-able although the hike is ~20 miles long with ~4000 feet of elevation gain.
Friday: Hike to Lake #3 or #4 depending on conditions and pitch tents. Sleep early (this should be ~5.5 miles of hiking with gear)
Saturday Morning: Up by 5:00 AM, begin ascent of New Army Pass. This should be about 13 miles r/t. Due to snow, I'm budgeting 1 mile/hour.
Saturday Evening: Get back to camp, have dinner, and sleep
Sunday Morning, Get up, and explore the remaining lakes before breaking camp and heading back to Lone Pine.
YOU WILL NEED TO OBTAIN A PERMIT FROM RECREATION.GOV, or GET A WALK IN PERMIT FROM A RANGER STATION IN ORDER TO ATTEND THIS EVENT!
Note that this hike is only for experienced hikers who have some experience in the snow. Anyone who arrives without appropriate gear will be turned away both for their safety and the safety of the rest of the group.
1) Ice Axe
3) Climbing Helmet (optional)
4) Waterproof Boots
6) Outer layers - the weather can be unpredictable at any time of the year in the Sierras, it may be hot and dry or we may end up wandering into a snow storm.
7) Standard hiking fare - Water, food, snacks, survival and emergency gear.
As always, if you have any questions let me know.
