The title of this exhibition, Tapeta Lucida, is Latin for “bright tapestry”, the layer of tissue in the eyes of many vertebrates which contributes to enhanced night vision in certain species.
Simply rendered with graphite on paper, a fusion of abstract and figurative imagery, this small menagerie of drawings gaze at their audience from a profile position and pose the question, 'What are your stories?'
Most of the images in this series were drawn unconsciously. The artist began drawing abstract forms and, after turning the page this way and that, looking for a way to continue the composition, saw the undeniable forms of animals waiting to be drawn into existence. The works are influenced by elements of art nouveau and decorative Tirolean folk art.
Through performance the artist will address some of the nuances of the relationship between Homo sapiens and fellow members of the animal kingdom.
Performance at 8:30 pm.
