MNDSGN, One of Stone Throw’s most exciting artists returns to the UK with an exclusive live performance at Birthdays, London 30th May 2015.
Mndsgn is pronounced mind design, although the law calls him Ringgo. He’s an anomaly among hip-hop producers – not raised in the suburbs on a steady diet of video games and hip-hop, but in the forest like a beast. His parents were members of the Philippine arm of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult, whose venture into terrorist activity caused them to flee the group in the late 1980s. They were granted political asylum in the U.S. and settled in rural New Jersey, where Ancheta was raised on the outskirts of a commune without electricity while his father worked as a researcher at Princeton Neuroscience Institute. Inspired by a Nas lyric and with a nod to his father’s work in neuroscience he began beat-making as Mndsgn and moved to Los Angeles.
His excellently-received 2014 LP Yawn Zen on Stones Throw followed the equally outstanding Surface Outtakes on the prolific Leaving Records. Its not just all him, though. Recent collaborations have included Danny Brown on Sweeney Song, Ivan Ave for Forks and Swarvy. A multitude of different releases – some on cassette – show how a prolific producer Ringgo is. His three breakfast show appearances on Boiler Room have given a further insight into his inspirations and creative process.
Songs on Yawn Zen were recorded “in a state of bliss,” as the producer explains. “I’ve allowed myself to study the absence of daily struggle and its effects, and began to subconsciously paint that vibe in the music.”
Mndsgn’s forthcoming – and only London show – at Birthdays offers an unmissable chance to hear his new music for the latter half of 2015 and beyond in an intimate live surrounding.
