Slowing brewing like the thunderheads to the south west that sweep into and bring relief to the sweltering city of Brisbane every summer, the songwriting partnership of Peter Clarke and Yance Jones have honed their songcraft with little fanfare out on the horizon of Brisbane's music scene. The result is a collection of well crafted songs built around the complementary talents of each. In 2014 they were joined by the like-minded talents of John Doyle (bass), Anthony Judd (Drums) and Craig McGrath (keys) who have given these songs the widescreen scope and urgency they deserve.
Primarily Influenced by the Alternative Country and Americana movements epitomised by bands such as Wilco, The Jayhawks and Whiskeytown; Mermaid Avenue also bring other influences to the fore delving into their previous musical history and record collections to bring elements of classic Australian Rock, the slackers and shoe gazers of the 1990's, the complexity of Jazz and the easy listening sounds of the West Coast troubadours of the early 1970's to forge a sound that at once pays homage to their heroes but also sets out to explore new angles and textures.
Fire & Whistle Theory
With their own signature sound it's hard to pinpoint exactly who Fire and Whistle Theory sound like. Not that it matters, because this upcoming band have set their sights on making new original music and they've been making an impact doing just that.
While listening to Fire and Whistle Theory you'll be taken you on a journey of the real moments that life beholds. These songwriters know how to write songs that are honest and not always pretty. Tom's vocals deliver every song in a crispness that allows the lyrics to seep into the mind. The clear notes and melodic harmonies combine with Keith's quiet focus on creating lasting effects and tight lead breaks. Mitch directs the band with control as his drumming style sets the pace while newcomer Mitchell 'Rosey' Rosenthal brings solid bass to the engine room, while Jordan, on rhythm guitar, is also known to have an alter ego as a hard-hitting Bad Mother F#@ker harmonica player.
You haven't heard a band like Fire and Whistle Theory but guarantee you'll be a fan when you do.
Leichhardt is a five-member rock n roll band from Brisbane that is all about the music and the good times. All-time classic bands like Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, AC/DC, the Faces and the Who rate highly on the list of bands we admire but so to do the singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen as well as local and more recent bands such as You Am I, Screamfeeder, Even and Dallas Crane. We all share a common interest in honest, straightforward song writing and playing. We all also share a common dislike for the often pretentious and self-appreciating aspects of the indie music scene generally.
Initiated in late 2003 by Sean and Liam, a year or so was spent drinking in pubs, talking it over, telling stories, writing songs and forgetting them before the rest of the line-up was slowly but surely cobbled together. After kicking off in 2005, the band has now played numerous shows at venues throughout Brisbane including Ric’s Bar, the Zoo, the Troubadour, the Alley and the Jubilee Hotel, both headlining and supporting established bands such as Knievel, Halfway, Charles Foster Kane and Shutterspeed. Our simple priority is to prove Leichhardt as an original, hard-working, song-based band to as many punters as possible.
Cody Jones & the Lost Company
Cody Jones and The Lost Company is a folk and country inspired band based in Brisbane. The band's sound draws on a range of influences from Bod Dylan and Neil Young to modern day songwriters and bands such as Ryan Adams and Wilco. They've been recording and rehearsing for the last year and have just completed their first self titled EP called One way street.
