“She could move a listener to tears.”—NPR Mavis Staples, lead vocals Yvonne Staples, vocals Donny Gerrard, vocals Vicki Randle, vocals Rick Holmstrom, guitar, vocals Jeff Turmes, bass, guitar, vocals Stephen Hodges, drums For more than six decades, Mavis Staples has been the solid rock of American music. From delta-inflected gospel in the 1950s (Uncloudy Day), to the engaged protest of the ‘60s (Freedom Highway), to pop radio in the 1970s with a series of chart hits (I’ll Take You There, Respect Yourself, and Let’s Do It Again), to countless jazz and blues collaborations, Staples has done it all. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2011 for You Are Not Alone, her first album produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. On her new Tweedy-produced album, One True Vine, Staples serves a darker, nuanced collection of songs that includes covers of Funkadelic and Nick Lowe. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone—who described her voice as “a rich, liquid wonder”—called her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
