March Against Monsanto Returns with 2015 Theme: Food for Justice, the Intersections of Social and Environmental Justice around Food Security
May 23rd, Shemanski Park
Bring your garden tools, straw hats, seed bombs, and vegetable starts.
Our food system has been put in jeopardy as it becomes increasingly industrialized, sterile, and designed to benefit the 1%. The dangers of our broken food system are felt disproportionately by communities of color and those in poverty, who have higher rates of malnutrition, cancer, and diseases caused by processed and unsafe foods.
This year March Against Monsanto is calling out the whole system. Industrial agriculture pollutes our watersheds, erases the genetic resilience of our food, abuses the rights of workers, and destroys our foodshed ecology. The most basic of human rights, access to safe food, has been replaced with the pursuit of profit. Our government and elected officials accept money from corporations like Monsanto and in turn promote laws that erode our community rights like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Speakers for March Against Monsanto: Food for Justice, will include:
Edward Hill, Groundwork Portland
Teressa Raiford, Don’t Shoot Portland
Adriana Voss-Andrade, 350 PDX
Robyn Gottlieb, Oregon Fair Trade Campaign
Karen Swift, Biosafety Alliance
Ibrahim Mubarak, Right 2 Survive
As well as local farmers and musical guests!
We are all farmers! We must take the power of self determination back into the hands of our communities through the avenues of direct democracy and direct action. We must pass ballot measures, elect representatives of the people that refuse corporate donations, and physically stop the violence of our present food system. Most importantly, this movement must lift up the marginalized communities that are currently most affected by those who profit off food insecurity.
Our co-sponsors include GMO Free Oregon, 350 PDX, Oregon Fair Trade Campaign, and Portland Rising Tide.
