“The Big Malarkey” is a vibrant and colourful weekend event located just outside Shepton Mallet, Somerset on the 24th-26th July 2015. The festival this year will hold around 2000 capacity. There will be 4 stages accommodating mainly Folk, Reggae, Punk, Techno, Jungle, Drum n Bass and an open mic community stage. There will also be a few old, working steam engines, rides, arts & crafts workshops, kids’ area, healing area + more.
Working with and introducing other funding award winners in our area who have their own passionate ideas to create a healthy alternative to addiction, depression and anxiety we intend to build a platform to promote these to each other and to the general public.
The event is to be held each year with the purpose of promoting social enterprise, to support & highlight action for youth awareness against alcohol & drugs addiction and also promoting multi-cultural community participation with positive action to tackle social problems in society. Our intent is that the Events Infrastructure Program will be continuously worked on throughout the year by building dual use compost toilets/stage sets, props, artwork and providing employment and workgroup training to qualification standard for; SIA Security, Event & Stage management, Rigging, Audio Engineering, Lighting Technician, Laser Technician, Décor & Drapes design & installation, Hospitality, PR. We are a social enterprise formed from a group of creative individuals and event production service companies to establish “The Hive” as a youth and children's project.
The Hive is a local organisation providing positive activities and training opportunities for young people in recovery or at risk from involvement in substance & alcohol abuse.
Their purpose is to promote sustainability, creativity, health, music and dance, art, enterprise and awareness.
The objective is to create an event which includes young people in planning a design process and also offers training opportunities for individuals with the potential to take on permanent roles in the core team.
In the months leading up to, during and after “The Big Malarkey” there will be several event infrastructure courses and workshops designed and managed by “The Hive” to involve young people in the planning and running of the events and to continue a program based on the learning from the first year that offers official positions within the organisation for the next year working alongside some events industry professionals specialist in their field.
