For years, the Sisters of Mercy have been working in conjunction with the Mercy Community across the nation on a global education initiative called Mercy Girl Rising. Currently, the sisters are running two schools, one in South Sudan and one in Cambodia. They encourage parents to send their daughters to school by providing them with breakfast and lunch and a take home dinner each night. Here’s the thing: it costs only $50 to provide these meals for one girl for an entire year and another $50 to pay for her tuition for that year. Each school year that a female student completes brings her one step closer to breaking the hold of the poverty cycle on her life. Each school year she completes helps her avoid teen pregnancy and child marriage. Each school year she completes helps her cultivate her mind and body to its full potential. It helps her find opportunity. It helps her take control of her own life.
In just a few short weeks, Gwynedd will be hosting its first ever Made in Mercy Concert, where 100% of the proceeds will benefit Mercy Girl Rising. The concert will feature local acts including GMAHS talent show winners and Whyte Planes, along with activity booths and food trucks. This community-wide event is projected to bring in over 1000 young people and families, and is sure to prove the “power of a girl.” So, how many girls will we help this year?
