The 6th Annual Memorial Event & 5K Run/Mile Walk is a kick-off to the Memorial Day weekend and will take place Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Springfield Botanical Gardens and Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park. Participants from across Southwest Missouri come together as a community to commemorate the memory of deceased loved ones in this annual community event. They purchase silk tulips to be placed in a special heart-shaped memorial garden, with each tulip representing a loved one. A special tag on each tulip will allow participants to write the name of the loved one or a brief message. After tulips are placed, participants will join in a brief, dignified ceremony about remembering lives that were important. Special recognition will be given to those honoring the memory of loved ones who were organ donors, allowing us to celebrate the wonderful gift of life they have given to others.
Following the Garden Ceremony, a 5K Run/Mile Walk occurs for those who register to participate in this aspect of the event. Some participants are seasoned runners, and others are families and teams of people running or walking in memory of loved ones. The number of participants the past several years has ranged from 425 – 650, making it one of the largest runs in Springfield.
Proceeds from sponsorships benefit Lost & Found programs and will help hundreds of families receive grief support at no charge at Lost & Found Grief Center.
