Hi guys :) I'm going to Ethiopia in July to volunteer with the charity Youth Release.
Youth Release works in the Gende Tesfa community (village of hope.) Based on the outskirts of Dire Dawa, this community was founded by missionaries to support people with leprosy who were outcast from the main city of Dire Dawa.
For decades this community has continued to be ostracised in Dire Dawa. The stigma of contacting leprosy has meant that people have been unable to find work and they have received little help from the government. There are just under 4000 Orphaned and vulnerable children in this area (not including the number of street children or migrating children). It is one of the most disadvantaged areas in the region.
Founded in 2007, Youth Release aims to support local organisations and provide educational, psychosocial and recreational programs in the area. Their goal is to give children the opportunity to develop their own talents and interests, which they can use to build and channel their own future.
Youth Release is a small group run solely be volunteers. Such charities are hard to come by today.
Each volunteer who travels to Dire Dawa in July must raise $2000 before going on the trip (every cent of this money goes to fund the project, I pay for my flights ,vaccinations, accommodation and food myself.)
You can read and see more of Youth Release's great work at www.youthrelease.ie
Thank you xxx
