Knox County Young Democrats, Knox Dems, and Tennessee Equality Project invite you to Harvey Milk Day 2015. We will be screening the film "Milk" starring Academy Award winner Sean Penn. After the film, we will have a discussion on Harvey's life and message. Join us in celebrating Harvey and his legacy on his birthday!
ABOUT HARVEY MILK
Harvey Milk was a visionary civil and human rights leader who became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. His remarkable career was tragically cut short when he was assassinated nearly a year after taking office.
A committed Democrat, Harvey believed that government should represent individuals, not just business interests, and should insure equality for all citizens while providing needed services. He served a broad neighborhood constituency, not just LGBT people. His ambitious reform agenda included protecting gay rights—he sponsored an important anti-discrimination bill—as well as establishing day care centers for working mothers, the conversion of military facilities in the city to low-cost housing, reform of the tax code to attract industry to deserted warehouses and factories, and a citizens' police oversight board. He was a powerful advocate for strong, safe neighborhoods, and pressured the mayor’s administration to improve services for the Castro, including library services and community policing.
Harvey also spoke out on state and national issues of interest to LGBT people, women, racial and ethnic minorities, and other marginalized communities. He pioneered the building of coalitions between diverse groups.
Harvey was a pioneer of the 20th century. We can make Harvey live forever by continuing to advance his message.
