** HAPPY HOLLOWS **
“Fierce guitar work and an otherworldly blend of glimmering synths. This is some cosmic stuff -- but it also has a lot of heart.”– WNYC Soundcheck
“instantly catchy shimmering pop hooks are just what you need to get the weekend rolling.”
“Truly magical, smashing all stereotypes of what female fronted bands are made of.”
“When I say this sounds like Stevie Nicks getting heavy into Kate Bush -- that's for sure a compliment. This is pop, sure, but pop with plenty of secrets at work deep within each song"
Happy Hollowsis the unlikeliest of matches, founded by two polar opposites: Northern California native and free-spirited guitarist Sarah Negahdariand international relations professor and bassist Charles Mahoney. The two initially met at a Los Angeles strip mall where Sarah was reading tarot cards to pay the bills. Mahoney had just moved to Los Angeles from Washington D.C. to pursue his Ph.D. at UCLA. At the time, neither could imagine they would spend the next couple of years writing songs, becoming a staple of Los Angeles’ underground music scene, and touring throughout the United States in a blue Chevrolet mini-van with over 200,000 miles on the odometer while supporting bands like Japandroids, Silversun Pickups, Deerhoof, and Wavves.
A fierce yet playful woman in rock music, Negahdari’s magnetic stage presence and striking musical prowess helped put Happy Hollows on the map of the Los Angeles music scene. In 2010, the band released their debut album,Spells, to critical acclaim. Pitchforkraved that Negahdari was “an obvious talent…let her hog the spotlight she so clearly deserves," whileWired Magazinewrote "Sarah is simply murder on the guitar!”
Between albums, Sarah filled in as the touring bassist for Silversun Pickups. Around this time, Happy Hollows music was also featured in a nationally aired Samsung cell phone commercial and the band had a guest appearance on the hit NBC TV show Parenthood.
OnAmethyst, the band’s second album,Happy Hollows immersed themselves in a newfound sense of sonic experimentation, incorporating melodic guitar lines and lush synthesizers to create soundscapes that propel Negahdari’s soaring, spirited vocals. On the album, Boxx Magazine described Negahdari as “an incredibly enthusiastic musician…full of energy, gratitude and dynamism.” When Amethyst was released, the band became a four piece adding the support of Long Beach guitar genie Matthew Fry and Peabody Conservatory trained drummer Daniel Marcellus, who is also the touring drummer for Lo-Fang.
Happy Hollows has just finished recording and mixing a series of songs in Los Angeles and London with Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast) and Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode). On their newest tracks, the group uses analog-synth based melodies, angular guitars, and polyrhythmic drumming to full effect, creating their best songs to date.
Tigre Fair Records / April 2015Electronic-leaning lo-fi indie duo Reykjavik Kids release their debut eponymous single through Tigre Fairon Record Store Day on 12" Vinyl. New video /single here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRkSCWtW5yY Feasting on a diet of Crystal Castles, Interpol and The Horrors, Reykjavík Kids narrate blurry memories of Newcastle’s infamous night scene and all that comes with itin their songs, withtales of the odd real life nightmare thrown in for good measure. The songs are underpinned with cheap synths, biting guitar riffs and immediate melodies that create a brand of noise-pop on edge with nervous energy.
The Reykjavík Kids are Scott Munro and Paul Tissington and music was an inescapable calling for both of them.It wasn't until 2008 when their separate paths collided outside a Tyneside rehearsal roomwhere they had both been holding a run of fruitless auditions for band members all day.
Paul had now become a prolific writer of riff-driven guitar songs after years of noise-rock addiction, while Scott had grown obsessed with melody, songwriting and effects. The pair quickly bonded, firing demos back and forth, each building a new layer and aesthetic to the sound. It wasn't long before they realised their musical traits were the perfect contrasts.
Their early demos found favour with London-based boutique label Tigre Fair who release their debut single, on 12" vinyl for a Record Store Day on 18th April.
The single ‘Reykjavik Kids’ will be followed by a 4 track EP due summer 2015. The duo are also set to support cult LAalt-rocktrio Happy Hollows on their UK and European tour in June.
