Anagach Woods, outside Grantown on Spey, date back nearly 250 years and, unlike modern forestry plantations and some deciduous woods, are not a tight, impenetrable mass of tree trunks, shrubs and grass.
Not least thanks to the grazing habits of roe deer, there is a feeling of space.
Another mammal to spot is the red squirrel - stay still and listen for their skittering claws as they hurry up and down branches and trunks. If you are very lucky you may see a pine marten, an elusive woodland creature you are more likely to catch a glimpse of at dawn or dusk. The same times are good to see the capercaillie, a massive woodland grouse which is at risk of extinction.
It would be remiss, also, not to make a slight detour to see the River Spey, a central feature of the region. From the Old Spey Bridge, dating back to the middle of the 18th century, you can see the wide sweep of the river. The dark, fast flowing waters come down from the Monadhliath and Cairngorm mountains, providing a rich habitat for salmon.
