On October 22, 2011, first grade teacher Kate White's sister-in-law, 1st Lt. Ashley White-Stumpf, was killed in action by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Khandahar, Afghanistan. Even though her family is rooted in Ohio, her death deeply impacted many people here in the Hagerstown, Maryland community. Throughout this difficult journey of healing, Ashley's family has had the support of many families, friends, colleagues, and community members.
On April 20th, a book entitled Ashley’s War, written by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, will be released to the public. It shares the story of Ashley and her fellow female soldiers from the Cultural Support Team. Their story is heroic, unique, and as of yet, untold. Even before the release date, the book has received much attention both locally and nationally. In fact, just last week, we were informed that the rights to the book were purchased by 20th Century Fox for the purpose of movie production.
Potomac Heights Elementary will have the distinguished honor of hosting a book signing by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon on May 26th, 2015. While Ms. Lemmon writes mainly for an adult audience, she will be providing an age appropriate presentation about her career as an author to the students during the school day. Following the dismissal of the students, community members will then be invited to the school for a book signing event.
We anticipate that this will be a wonderful educational opportunity for our students, families, and Washington County community members. The staff at Potomac Heights Elementary is thrilled to bring this very special opportunity to our students and our community.
Please RSVP using this Event Page so that Harper Collins will have an accurate estimate of the books needed for this event.
