Funny Girl is a semi-biographical musical based on the life and early career of Broadway, film star and comedienne Fanny Brice. The story opens backstage at the New Amsterdam Theatre during the early 1920’s, where Ziegfield Follies star Fanny Brice awaits the release of her husband, entrepreneur and gambler Nicky Arnstein, from prison. As Fanny nervously awaits his arrival, she begins to reflect on over a decade of triumphs and pitfalls from being an awkward, stage-struck teen getting her first job in vaudeville to a glorified Ziegfeld star. Although she is initially burdened by her unconventional looks – Fanny begins to break the mold of what it takes to be famous. But it is her blossoming romance with the sophisticated and handsome Nick Arnstein that launches her private life to the helm of the story. Funny Girl is filled with lively and warm characters and a beautiful song list. Fanny’s journey is relatable to anyone who has found themselves at a crossroad; has fallen in love; but above all, has dreamt of becoming a star!
With a book by Isobel Lennart, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Bob Merrill – this is a production not to be missed!
