English National Opera: Pirates of Penzance
Guaranteed to be a major event, Mike Leigh (Palme d’Or winner and five times Oscar nominee) directs his first ever opera for the stage to be shown on screen.
Set sail with this classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in musical theatre history. Gilbert and Sullivan's hilarious, hopeful farce follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates' way of life and falls for the beautiful daughter of Major General Stanley, Mabel. Only the Pirate King can stand in the way of this pair of whimsical lovers.
Sullivan’s popular comic opera features much-loved favourites, including A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One and I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General.
