Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg returns to City Center with the New York premiere of Up and Down, a full-length ballet that delves into Sigmund Freud’s view of the unconscious mind through a love story set in the dazzling, decadent 1920s. The heroes: a young woman struggling to overcome mental illness, and a self-destructive man who winds up betraying his soul and his talent.
Set to the sumptuous music of Alban Berg, Franz Schubert, and George Gershwin, Up and Down is the culmination of Eifman’s “ballets on psychiatric themes” cycle, and cements his reputation as “virtually the only [narrative ballet choreographer] totally in touch with the 21st century” (Los Angeles Times).
