James Bay is home to some of the richest history in Victoria, and as you will discover, it is full of hidden gems of local food. Think that you need to escape the city to pursue your homesteading dreams? Think again! In this tour, discover local food you never thought possible! Journey into the past and learn about the history of local food in Victoria, discover healthy local food freely available through urban wildcrafting, and be guided through an intimate tour of one of Victoria's most inventive and productive urban homesteads. Discover apples you never knew existed, berries that defy expectation, ducks that travel, chickens with friends throughout the neighbourhood, and let's not forget about the wasabi and home-grown marshmallows! Yes, you can grow your own marshmallows, they ARE medicinal, and they go GREAT in hot chocolate! This homestead also happens to be owned & operated by one of Victoria's most colourful and experienced local tour guides, so you can expect to be nourished with deliciously informative tales and anecdotes. The tour doesn't end here, and we will also have the opportunity to explore a grocery store that doesn't fit the mold and has stood the test of time! The tour will last 3 hours, and end at the James Bay Community Garden, within walking distance of Mile Zero, where we began the tour began. Tea and light snacks will be served throughout the day, with recommendations for delicious sustainable local restaurants within the area if you are hungry after the tour! You will also have the opportunity to savour locally-crafted medicinal superfood chocolates, lovingly made with ingredients that can be grown right at home! He has travelled the world studying Globalization and Sustainability of Cities, and graduated with an Urban Studies Degree from the University of Calgary in 2010. Upon returning to Canada, he began seeking practical solutions to the challenges he witnessed in the mega-cities of Pacific Asia. This quest lead him on a solo pilgrimage into the Rocky Mountains, and eventually back into the city, where he began studying permaculture design, food forestry, and urban placemaking. Here he learned and worked alongside experts in these fields, including Javan Bernakevitch, Mark Lakeman, Darren Doherty, Richard Walker, and Brandon Bauer. Since then he has designed and completed numerous edible forest gardens, workshops, and educational events. He thrives in teaching, sharing the magic of food forestry, artistic design, and bridging the needs of diverse interest groups. Upon completing a business development course with Ethos Career Management Group, he spearheaded the corporate launch of Living Landscapes with Nick Poeta and Marc DeMontigny.
