53rd and Woodland in West Philly was the street corner where the members of 5/3 Woodland grew up and used to "hang" and harmonize. Doo-wop music features vocal group harmony, nonsense syllables, an easy beat, little or no instruments, and simple music and lyrics. Developed in African-American communities in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Newark, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Washington DC and Los Angeles in the 1940’s, doo-wop became one of the most popular music styles of the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Doo-wop music has influenced pop, rock, punk, and R & B acts including The Four Seasons, The Beach Boys, Billy Joel, The Ramones, Meghan Trainor and Bruno Mars.
Proceeds benefit youth trips (Appalachia Service Project and 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering).
