**FRIDAY JUNE 5 // 9PM // $8**
A long, long time ago (2012) in a land far, far away (the fabled wilds of Canada), there lived a band of intrepid musical warriors. After journeying far and wide (in Canada), and spreading the good word of their minstrelsy (hook-laden power pop), collecting and crafting stories alike, our heroes conspired to create an aural memoir of their past, through the eyes of Dany Laj. This is that memoir.
Word On The Street is the first full-length album by Montreal's Dany Laj and the Looks, following up 2010's the Match EP and 2012's Telepathic Voices EP, and is a collection of stories of day-to-day life experienced by Laj through his travels and erstwhile (mis)fortunes. The album was captured live-off-the-floor onto tape over a frigid February week in 2014 in Toronto, ON, at Stu-Stu-Studio by engineer Brendan Howlett. Aided with the power of Laj's diaries, old set lists, and his Timmins tuxedo, Laj takes you through a voyage that starts in his hometown of Kirkland Lake that rolls you through the dive bars and alleyways from Northern Ontario to Southern, along the 401 and into Quebec. Word On The Street is densely packed with driven melodic hooks and enough power pop jangle to make the 70s British pubrock scene blush, nevertheless, the meticulously crafted songs are timeless.
The trio at the core of Word On The Street (Laj, guitar, lead vocals; Jeanette Dowling, bass, vocals; Lewis Handford, drums) are augmented by a cast of characters hand-picked by Laj. Backing vocals are provided by Laura Hermison (BB Guns, Twist), Samantha Martin, Heather Mazhar (Beams), Anna Mernieks (Beams), and Zero (Zro4); percussion and backing vocals by Sean Dignan (Suckerpunch, Dodge Fiasco) and keyboards by Jay Lemak (Action Makes). The record was mixed in Montreal in August 2014 by Samuel Gemme and mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel in February 2015.
