JOIN SARA MARCUS, JACINTA BUNNELL AND UV! (LOCAL RIOT GRRRL-INSPIRED BAND) FOR A DAY OF FEMINISM, ZINE-MAKING, COLORING BOOKS, CREATIVITY AND LIVE MUSIC. Authors Sara Marcus (Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution) and Jacinta Bunnell (The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book) will read from their books and lead a zine-making workshop. UV! will get us dancing with their authoritative sound. In this hands-on workshop, you will create a zine of your very own to take home. Zines are D.I.Y. photocopied publications about anything - lists, letters, true stories, music, adventures, fiction, gripes, etc. Zines are motivated by desire for self-expression, not for profit. By making a zine, you get to put your ideas out into the world--in a concrete physical form--without anybody else editing you or telling you what to say. Some zines are how-to zines or are made to express visual or art ideas. Some zines just tell stories or read like diaries. Zines played an integral role in communicating feminist ideas during the riot grrrl movement, frequently drawing out the political implications of people’s first-hand experiences with issues of violence, gender, sexuality, race, ability and identity. You may bring some written ideas, collage materials, photos and magazines to make your zines. _________________________ Sara Marcus is the author of Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution. Her writing can also be found in Bookforum, Artforum, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Review of Books, n+1, and the books No Regrets and The Essential Ellen Willis. A pianist and drummer, she wrote a song for last year’s Jill Sobule album, Dottie’s Charms, and she has volunteered for several years at girls’ rock camps on both coasts. She is a PhD candidate at Princeton, where she is working on a book about American literature, sound, and political feelings. Jacinta Bunnell will unveil The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book, the latest book in her queer feminist coloring book series from PM Press. Bunnell has created four coloring books which offer a way for people of all ages to look at cultural expectations of gender and sexuality: Sometimes the Spoon Runs Away with Another Spoon Coloring Book, Girls Will Be Boys Will Be Girls Will Be..., Girls Are Not Chicks, and The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book. Jacinta and her books have toured the U.S. and Canada with DavEnd, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Neko Case, Julie Novak, The Sparkle Kids Action Network and The Gadabout Film Fest. She has been leading zine-making workshops since 1996. She has been a feminist since the last apocalypse. UV! sprung out of a shared desire to learn and play a Bikini Kill song and now these young women are taking the Hudson Valley by storm. $5 suggested donation contact:
