 Calle Ocho Leeds
For our fourth monthly "Viva La Musica" live Latin music concert of 2015 we take a different musical direction as we support one of our own local bands. After Colombian, Brazilian and Dominican parties and live bands, we focus this time on Latin New York of the 1960s and 1970s and the sounds of salsa dura (hard salsa) and mambo. We welcome to the stage our very own Leeds salsa kings, Orquesta Leodis, led by timbalero Barry Cooper. Barry was the pianist with Yorkshire salsa band Mambo Con Rumbo for a few years before switching to timbales and forming his own 8 piece band. On congas is well known Leeds salsa DJ/danceteacher Philip Charles. On keyboards is original Leeds salsa pianist David Munoz from Chile (Grupo Pa'lante, Casa Latina Allstars, Omar Puente Band) and on vocals, also from Chile, is one of the area's top salsa singers, Ana Luisa Muñoz, (who also sings with Tarantismo). These salsa veterans are joined by a host of young brass players working professionally across music genres on the local scene. Expect to hear classic Big Apple style hard salsa and mambo songs and arrangements, keeping alive the incendiary and raw sound of 1970s Latin New York. To warm you up we have Leeds' original on2 salsa dance queen, Miss Nicky Lloyd Greame, taking an improver level salsa class. Nicky was dancing and teaching salsa in London in the late 1990s and then returned to Leeds around 2003 and started classes here. She taught around the UK and abroad for around 6 years before returning to London for non salsa related work. However in 2014, she moved back to Yorkshire and is now working with Jake Dyson's StreetSalsa company. It's good to have her back. Class starts promptly at 9.15pm. Your DJs on the night are the northern dream team, Calle Ocho's DJ Lubi and Fabio Bahia, joined by special guest Philip Charles. Expect the full spectrum of past and present salsa from all genres plus a touch of cha cha cha, bachata, son Cubano and mambo. Doors 9pm. Danceclass 9.15pm. Band onstage 10.45pm. Clubnight and salsa DJs to 3am. Tickets £10 advance available from 15th April at these outlets : (0113 245 5570) Casa Colombiana Leeds Belgrave Music Hall Leeds The band, the danceteacher, the DJs
