Learn the art, craft, and business of Street Performing! Work-And-Playshop led by Coelti.
~ ~ ~ Thursday, May 21st, 2015 6pm-8pm ~ ~ ~
Hosted by Pirate Ninja Gypsy Dance Studios, in Humboldt Park near North/Pulaski. Address sent to registered participants.
Equal parts improv class, business seminar, movement exploration, and community conversation, Busking 101 will lay the groundwork that helps you share your performance art with the spontaneous audiences of the street, and learn how to effectively make money doing so. This workshop is OPEN TO ALL skill and interest levels, from the curious to the die-hard, beginner to lifer. We welcome the willing. :)
Street performing, also known as "busking", is one of society's oldest professions, and one that is commonly misunderstood. In this two hour playshop, we will cover everything you need to know about busking: from supplies to skills, taxes to permits, how to present oneself and create worthwhile streets shows, how to professionally handle both success and struggle, the ever-important "pitch" and "hat-trick", the difference between Chicago/urban street performance and performance in suburbs or rural areas, and more. MUCH, much more.
After we have covered our basics in the playshop, each participant will have an opportunity to be coached by Coelti on a "Busking Outing", where we will take what we previously learned and put it to work on the streets.

About the instructor: Coelti is a Chicago-based performance artist. Known best for her hoop dance and involvement in the world of hooping, she is also an improviser, film actor, writer, event producer, fire dancer, and street performer by trade. She has been hooping since 2008, busking since 2011, loves making genuine connections and loves empowering her fellow human beings to push themselves into new realms of experience. She is also a big goofball who feels silly writing about herself in the third person. ;)
