For ALMOST 7 YEARS the Burlington Slam Project has been providing a platform for voices of all styles to find their own and earn bigger opportunities, while entertaining and interacting with our audience, fans and friends. MAY 21st we return to provide a monthly open mic, poetry slam and featured spoken word artist in the City of Burlington. This slam is for ANYONE wanting to have their performance scored by the randomly selected audience judges. For anyone who DOESN’T WANT TO BE JUDGED; there is ALWAYS an OPEN MIC. With the generous support of our favourite local pub, The Black Bull; we are able to offer the winner of our slam a generous CA$H PRIZE!!! Make sure and show them some love when you get there. (“Like” their Facebook page if you haven’t yet!) Got Something to Say?! Every month we have an Open Mic (anyone can sign up and share anything for 5 minutes), a poetry slam (a competition judged by the audience) and a different feature artist offers a performance set courtesy of the generous support of The Canada Council for the Arts. You get all of this for ONLY $5!! MAY’s FEATURE is Patrick de Belen: Patrick de Belen is an award-winning spoken word artist, youth mentor and arts educator. Legend has it, that he harnessed his inner-dopeness at an unbelievably early age, and had trouble controlling it ever since. Birthed from an intricately spun web of hypocrisy, cynicism, privilege and struggle, PDB’s poetry is a young man’s attempt at knowing and being better than expected. With clever punchlines and a raw perspective, his style of storytelling has earned him a national poetry slam championship, the inaugural Canadian Youth Poet of Honor Award and the opportunity to share his work in venues and festivals all across North America for organizations like TED, CBC, NXNE and more. Off the stage, PDB is focused on his real passion of inspiring, healing, and mobilizing youth everywhere. He is the Director of BAM! Youth Slam, Toronto’s only monthly youth poetry slam, as well as a resident arts educator/spoken word artist for numerous schools across five Boards in Ontario. Whether it’s the hundreds of classrooms he’s taught in, or the many grassroots initiatives he has a hand in, his quest to spark dialogue with our young leaders continues to gain momentum. Come on out and see why poets from all over come to slam at “the bsp”. Bring a friend or an enemy, take a shot at the open mic or come be a judge; it’s all a part of the show and we couldn’t have one without you! We are in the back room (Banquet Hall) at The Bull, just ask at the bar. Doors at 7:30, Sign-up at 8:00 pm, show starts by 8:30. $5 cover Hosted by The Burlington Slam Project Volunteers needed for door, timer and scorekeeping – please contact Tomy Bewick or Dan Murray directly to inquire.
