Black Graduation is a graduation celebration ceremony.
Black Graduation is a celebration for *>>MINORITIZED<<* students *>>AND ALLIES<<* to commemorate their success in graduating from a 4 year university and completing a degree. This event is a pre commencement ceremony that acknowledges the added difficulties minoritized students face at a four year university.
Black Graduations happen all over the country in many different ways, many times solely for African American students. UCI, Standford, UCLA, and USC are among those who have Black Graduation Ceremonies.
However, when Chapman BSU decided to create Black Grad we wanted to open it up to ALL minoritized students for the following reasons:
1. There are so few black students, let alone black students who are graduating at Chapman.
2. African American students are not the only group of students that are marginalized by the education institution.
Here at Chapman, we have very few minoritized students, and even fewer resources to aid minority students through the added pressure, difficulty, and struggles that are associated with being a minority at such a UNIFORMED school. This makes the college experience tougher, however it gives a student, who has triumphed, an even bigger reason to celebrate.
**PLEASE NOTE: This event is open to the entire campus and anyone can come to the ceremony on May 21st. However we hope everyone, who does attend, understands that the celebration is to recognize the achievements of minoritzed students at Chapman who are graduating: individually and collectively.
Participation in "Black Grad" includes:
*a graduation sash
*a "Black Grad" yearbook
*Participation in a special Ceremony just for you in Memorial hall on May 21st at 7pm.
You can invite as many guests as you like, and your parents, family, and friends will also have an opportunity to buy ad space for you in our black grad yearbook.
*This is a celebration for minoritized students AND ALLIES. This is a celebration of you, your achievements, and cultural awareness!
*This event is open to both undergraduates and graduates.
* YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE BLACK TO PARTICIPATE!!!
*If you graduated last December ('14), or you will be graduating this August, or this December ('15), but will be walking in May you can still participate.
*THIS IS NOT A CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY SANCTIONED EVENT. THIS EVENT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY CHAPMAN BSU!
You have until April 8th to RSVP for Black Graduation.
