The Bird-A-Thon is a fundraiser where we attempt to find as many bird species as possible in one day. The Bird-A-Thon will start at 6:30 am on May 16th at Hoffler Creek Preserve in Portsmouth to search for songbirds. Just before 8 am, we will head to Craney Island Disposal Area, operated by the Army Corps. of Engineers, to search for waterfowl and shorebirds (as well as others). We need to arrive at the gate for Craney Island between 8 am and 8:15 am to sign-in and be allowed entry. After this, we will probably head to the Great Dismal Swamp NWR, followed by a trip to Southampton County and surrounding areas, where we will search for more woodland and open country species and, at dusk, we hope to find nightjars and owls. If interested in joining the group (feel free to join us for part or all of the day) or to make a donation, contact Elisa Flanders at 757-879-1034 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Donations go to support Cape Henry Audubon programs, such as annually sending a teacher to Audubon's Hog Island Camp.
