#BetterBlockNewark is modeled off of the national Better Block movement which has transformed blocks and neighborhoods across the country.
The Better Block model is about immediate, highly visible and grassroots-based project that transform a block and eventually a neighborhood.
Better Block @ Bergen Street will take 1-2 block(s) of Bergen Street and give it a make-over. This is a collaborative effort that will involve residents, business owners, local artists, contractors, entrepreneurs and city officials. The effort is being spurred by the City of Newark but it will be owned by the Bergen Street community.
Better Block Newark @ Bergen Street will begin in April 2015 with the identification of the target block or blocks, a shortlist of immediate demonstration projects and an announcement of an unveiling date and kick-off event to include outdoor programming. Projects must be able to be done this Spring and must be in furtherance of stakeholders’ visions for improving Bergen Street.
Some examples of projects done in other cities as part of the Better Block movement include turning vacant stores into art galleries, locally-run businesses and street vendors, turning bleak sidewalks into outdoor cafes with trees, and turning vacant lots into markets and gathering places. Better Block: Bergen Street may involve any variety of similar projects, all to be identified by community stakeholders.
